The Los Angeles Lakers have reached a four-year, $185 million maximum agreement with guard Austin Reaves, ending any chance the 28-year-old would test the open market on July 1.
According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, Lakers governor Jeanie Buss, general manager Rob Pelinka and other team executives hosted Reaves and his representatives in a private room at the club’s El Segundo practice facility shortly after the NBA Finals. The organization tailored the setting with Reaves’ preferred country music and custom “AR” pillows before discussing contract terms.
Team officials learned in the past 48 hours that Reaves was positioned to receive multiple max offers in free agency, with the Detroit Pistons identified as one aggressive suitor seeking additional perimeter scoring. In response, Los Angeles presented the same four-year figure rival teams could offer and added a player option for the 2029-30 season.
The deal makes Reaves the highest-paid undrafted player in NBA history. The Lakers could have extended a five-year contract but opted to mirror the maximum duration available elsewhere while including the extra flexibility.
With Reaves’ contract settled, the Lakers will now turn their attention to reshaping the roster around Reaves and All-NBA guard Luka Dončić as free agency approaches.
