Trade Buzz Involves Raptors’ RJ Barrett, Timberwolves’ Roster Targets and Mavericks’ Draft Plans

Rival front offices have contacted the Toronto Raptors to gauge the availability of forward RJ Barrett as part of multi-team trade discussions, HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto reported. While Toronto has not signaled an outright desire to move the 26-year-old, Barrett’s expiring contract and production make him one of the club’s strongest trade chips.

The former No. 3 overall pick averaged 19.3 points, 5.3 rebounds and 3.3 assists last season, then lifted those numbers to 24.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists in Toronto’s first-round playoff series against Cleveland. Entering the final year of his deal, Barrett’s combination of age and experience has drawn interest from contenders and rebuilding teams alike.

Timberwolves pursue upgrades around Edwards

The Minnesota Timberwolves remain active in the marketplace as they look to bolster the roster around All-Star guard Anthony Edwards. Scotto confirmed that Minnesota has inquired about guard Josh Giddey, with the Phoenix Suns also gathering information on the Oklahoma City playmaker.

Re-signing restricted free agent Ayo Dosunmu continues to be a priority for Minnesota. League executives told HoopsHype the 24-year-old could command between $18 million and $24 million annually on a new contract, and the Wolves are working toward an agreement.

In addition, Minnesota has explored deals involving Julius Randle, Donte DiVincenzo and the No. 28 pick in this month’s draft as it seeks roster improvements, indicating the franchise is reluctant to simply stand pat.

Mavericks weighing draft-night moves

The Dallas Mavericks are expected to be one of the most active teams during the June draft, according to Jake Fischer of The Stein Line. Dallas has shown a willingness to move either up or down from the No. 9 selection, though a trade back is viewed as the more likely scenario.

The Mavericks and Arizona guard Brayden Burries have expressed mutual interest if the freshman remains on the board at No. 9. Should Burries be selected earlier, Dallas could look to trade down in order to acquire additional assets.

The draft is scheduled for June 26–27 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
