The Los Angeles Lakers face a pivotal decision on forward Rui Hachimura as the 2026 free-agency period approaches, and multiple league insiders told ESPN the 28-year-old could wind up seeking a new team if Los Angeles cannot meet his contract demands.
Hachimura is coming off a breakout campaign capped by a historic three-point shooting run in the postseason. On Apr. 24, 2026, he helped the Lakers defeat the Houston Rockets in Game 3 of the first round at Toyota Center, underscoring his value while injuries sidelined Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves.
The former lottery pick earned $18.2 million last season and is expected to pursue a raise. While the Lakers have payroll flexibility, they must also navigate the free agencies of Marcus Smart, Luke Kennard, Jaxson Hayes, Reaves and LeBron James, in addition to exploring upgrades at small forward and center.
Team officials are reportedly prioritizing defensive wings and a center who fits Doncic’s style, creating the possibility that Hachimura becomes “the odd man out,” according to the ESPN report. Despite that scenario, earlier indications suggested the organization hoped to retain both Hachimura and Hayes.
If Los Angeles cannot strike a deal, executives around the league believe a rival club will offer Hachimura the contract he seeks.
