Luka Doncic Calls Lakers’ 2023-24 Campaign “Bad,” Says Upcoming Offseason Is Crucial

Luka Doncic labeled the Los Angeles Lakers’ 2023-24 season a failure and described the coming offseason as especially significant as the franchise looks to retool its roster.

Speaking in Madrid during a Jordan Brand tour, the All-NBA guard told Spanish journalist Jorge Quiroga of Marca that any year without a championship is “bad.” Dončić, who missed the 2024 playoffs because of a left hamstring strain, said the Lakers’ inability to contend for a title defined the season.

“Whenever you don’t win, it’s a bad season,” Doncic said in the interview, which was later translated into English.

The 25-year-old noted that Los Angeles had a “real opportunity” for a deeper postseason run if not for his injury and the left oblique strain that sidelined guard Austin Reaves for the first four playoff games.

With significant salary-cap space and multiple first-round draft picks, the Lakers enter the summer positioned to reshape the roster around their franchise star. Doncic emphasized the importance of adding “good people on the team,” calling this offseason “a little more important” than usual.

The Slovenian guard outlined his preferences for roster upgrades, saying the Lakers need additional three-point shooters and athletic big men who can finish in pick-and-roll situations.

Los Angeles has not won an NBA title since 2020. Both the organization and Doncic reiterated their shared goal of returning the team to championship contention.
