League expectations surrounding James Harden’s future in Cleveland remain unchanged, according to recent reporting by Ashish Mathur of Cavs Roundtable, who cited earlier coverage from ESPN. The 34-year-old guard is still projected to decline his $42 million player option for 2024-25 and negotiate a new multi-year deal with the Cavaliers this summer.
Harden joined Cleveland at the February trade deadline and immediately partnered with Donovan Mitchell to steady the backcourt. Behind that tandem, the Cavaliers advanced to the Eastern Conference finals for the first time since 2018 before being swept by the New York Knicks.
After the series, Harden told reporters, “Definitely want to be here. I think we found something,” underscoring mutual interest in a long-term stay. Since then, neither side has shown signs of concern about reaching an agreement.
Cleveland is expected to explore additional roster upgrades during the offseason and continues to be linked to high-profile names such as LeBron James and Giannis Antetokounmpo. Even so, re-signing Harden is widely considered one of the organization’s primary objectives.
In 28 regular-season games with the Cavaliers, the future Hall of Famer averaged 20.5 points and 7.7 assists, giving the club another reliable playmaker alongside Mitchell.
No contract can be finalized until Harden formally declines his option and both parties sign the paperwork, but multiple league insiders indicate all signals still point toward the veteran remaining in Cleveland.
