San Antonio, TX — Spurs center Victor Wembanyama said his club resembles “spoiled kids” following Saturday’s 108-105 loss to the Knicks that dropped San Antonio to 0-2 in the NBA Finals.
Responding to veteran forward Harrison Barnes’ warning not to take the moment for granted, the 22-year-old French star told a reporter in his native language that New York “understands how fortunate they are” to reach the championship round. “As for us, we’re kind of like spoiled kids,” he added. “For some of us, it’s our first season, or one of our first seasons, and we’re already in the Finals. We don’t fully realize it yet.”
At an average age older only than the 1977 Trail Blazers, the Spurs are the second-youngest roster ever to appear in the Finals.
Game 2 growing pains
Wembanyama fueled a late rally but committed a costly turnover and foul that returned the lead to New York, then missed a potential game-winner in the final seconds. He later told The Athletic that the defeat illustrated “how difficult it is to become a champion.”
Castle’s brief injury scare
Second-year guard Stephon Castle exited Game 2 for roughly six minutes after landing on Mikal Bridges’ foot. Castle said Sunday the injury “feels a lot better than I thought it would,” noting the swelling subsided overnight.
Additional notes
- ESPN’s Zach Kram broke down the key possessions that decided Game 2.
- Center Bismack Biyombo told Andscape he has embraced a mentoring role with Wembanyama throughout the postseason run.
The series shifts to Madison Square Garden for Game 3 on Wednesday night.
