San Francisco, CA – Golden State Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. said Friday that the franchise wants Draymond Green to retire with the team, but the veteran forward will decide his immediate future over the next several weeks.
Green, 36, holds a $27.7 million player option for 2026-27 and must inform the club of his plans by June 29. He can exercise the option, use it as leverage for a longer deal, or decline it and enter unrestricted free agency.
“We want him to finish his career as a Warrior. He feels the same way,” Dunleavy told reporters. “I would expect him to be back, but it’s his call.”
Head coach Steve Kerr echoed that sentiment. “It’s up to him,” Kerr said. “He has the player option, so he has to go through that with his agent. I’m committed to coaching him and Steph [Curry] for as long as they’re here.”
Other roster decisions looming
Dunleavy added that Golden State is optimistic about retaining big men Kristaps Porzingis and Al Horford. Porzingis, acquired from Atlanta at February’s trade deadline, will become an unrestricted free agent on July 1, and Dunleavy said negotiations on a new contract will begin “soon.” Horford, who joined the Warriors last summer, holds a player option worth nearly $6 million.
“Those are guys we’d love to have back,” Dunleavy said. “They had some really good performances this year and add an element to our team that we haven’t had in the past.”
Injury updates
The general manager provided brief medical updates on two injured rotation players. Jimmy Butler, who tore his ACL, and Moses Moody, recovering from a ruptured patellar tendon, are both progressing in rehabilitation, but the club does not yet have target dates for their returns.
Season assessment
Dunleavy cited turnovers as a primary issue during a season that unraveled amid injuries to Butler and Curry. Columnist Monte Poole of NBC Sports Bay Area noted the Warriors lost 22 of their final 32 games and questioned whether the organization is underestimating its roster challenges.
