Former NBA center Jason Collins is receiving treatment for a brain tumor, his family announced on September 11, 2025, in a statement distributed by the league.
“Jason and his family welcome your support and prayers and kindly ask for privacy as they focus on Jason’s health and well-being,” the statement said.
Collins, 46, broke ground in 2013 when he became the first openly gay athlete to appear in a regular-season game in the NBA, NFL, MLB or NHL. After retiring, he served as an ambassador for the NBA.
The 7-footer was selected 18th overall in the 2001 draft and played 13 seasons, spending most of his career with the Nets. He concluded his NBA tenure with Brooklyn in 2014.
According to NBC Sports reporter Kurt Helin, Collins married longtime partner and film producer Brunson Green earlier this year.
Hoops Rumors extended its best wishes to Collins and his family.
