The Dallas Mavericks on Monday rejected Los Angeles Lakers coach JJ Redick’s assertion that the team’s medical staff conducted an incorrect MRI on guard Austin Reaves.
Reaves, who injured his left oblique and rib area during Thursday’s game against the Oklahoma City Thunder, underwent imaging in Dallas on Saturday. Redick told reporters the initial scan “focused on the wrong area,” forcing a second MRI.
“I don’t know where the chain of command lies with Dallas imaging, but they scanned the wrong area,” Redick said. “Not on our end. We made it explicit what was supposed to be scanned, but they scanned the wrong area.”
In a written statement, the Mavericks disputed that account. “Our medical team followed standard imaging protocols based on the information provided at the time,” the club said. “There was no error in the scan performed.”
The follow-up imaging confirmed a Grade 2 oblique strain. The 27-year-old Reaves is expected to miss four to six weeks.
