Los Angeles Lakers guard Austin Reaves believes center Jaxson Hayes has reached a new level this season, calling the 26-year-old’s current run “some of the best basketball he’s played in his career.” Reaves offered the assessment after Hayes delivered another strong performance in Friday night’s win over the Indiana Pacers at Crypto.com Arena.
Unexpected rise after roster overhaul
Hayes moved into a starting role last year when the Lakers sent Anthony Davis to the Dallas Mavericks for Luka Dončić. Although the 7-footer finished that regular season well, he struggled in the playoffs, casting doubt on his future in Los Angeles. The club ultimately brought him back on a one-year deal to back up newly acquired center Deandre Ayton.
The signing has quietly paid off. Hayes has been outperforming Ayton in recent weeks and owns the fourth-best plus-minus on the roster at +54.
Statistical impact in limited minutes
Through 53 games, including eight starts, Hayes is averaging 7.0 points and 4.0 rebounds in just 17.7 minutes per contest. His 76.4% field-goal rate ranks among the NBA’s leaders, boosted by a steady diet of lob finishes, especially in pick-and-roll sets with Dončić. Coaches have also noted improvements in his defense and short-roll playmaking.
Reaves praises maturity and preparation
Asked where Hayes has grown the most, Reaves pointed to the big man’s approach off the floor. “You can tell he is growing in those aspects, and that’s just made him a better player,” Reaves said. “We need him to continue to do it; it’s a big part of what we’re gonna do.”
Redick ready to lean on Hayes
Head coach JJ Redick echoed that confidence with Ayton battling injuries. “Very confident. I thought he was terrific tonight,” Redick said after Hayes logged 28 minutes in a loss to the Denver Nuggets. “Jaxson, I definitely have confidence in him.”
With Ayton’s status uncertain, Hayes’ continued production could be critical as the Lakers push toward the postseason.
