WASHINGTON — First‐year Wizards coach Brian Keefe said he welcomed the fire that led to guard Trae Young’s ejection during Monday night’s 135–117 loss to the Houston Rockets.

Young, who has yet to appear in a game for Washington, left the bench and stepped onto the floor while pleading for a foul after Houston forward Tari Eason knocked down Wizards rookie Jamir Watkins in the second quarter. Officials assessed Young two technical fouls and removed him from the game.

Keefe framed the incident as a positive sign of chemistry forming within a retooled roster.

“I think he was just sticking up for his teammates, which I thought was great,” the coach told reporters postgame. “Obviously the refs missed a call, our guy got knocked down, and I loved how our teammates stuck with him. … I was actually proud of him because he stuck up for us.”

Young echoed that sentiment on social media, writing on X on March 3, 2026: “Don’t expect me to get ejected too many more times D.C… but I’m definitely bringing that energy & competitiveness when I’m back for my brothers!”

The three‐time All-Star, acquired at the trade deadline, is expected to make his Wizards debut Thursday against the Utah Jazz.
