The Minnesota Timberwolves re-signed 19-year veteran Mike Conley on Wednesday, just two weeks after sending the point guard out in a cost-cutting trade.

Conley was dealt to the Chicago Bulls in a three-team transaction, then moved again the next day when Chicago packaged him with Coby White in a swap with the Charlotte Hornets. Charlotte waived Conley the following day, making him eligible to return to Minnesota.

By removing Conley’s original salary, the Timberwolves dropped their payroll below the league’s first luxury-tax apron. That positioning allowed the club to bring the 38-year-old back on a veteran minimum contract and created enough cap flexibility to acquire guard Ayo Dosunmu from Chicago in a separate deal.

Although his minutes and statistics have declined this season, Conley remains valued inside the organization for his leadership and professionalism. He is a four-time recipient of the NBA Sportsmanship Award and has twice been honored as the league’s Teammate of the Year.

Minnesota enters the post-All-Star stretch at 34-22, holding sixth place in the Western Conference. The Timberwolves host the Dallas Mavericks on Friday in their first game after the break.
