Blazers Confront Key Roster Calls Amid Ownership Change and Coaching Search

The Portland Trail Blazers enter the offseason with a new ownership group, a head-coaching vacancy and several pivotal roster questions, starting with point guard Scoot Henderson.

Henderson, 20, becomes extension-eligible this summer with one season left on his rookie deal. Expectations for a breakout year were derailed by a hamstring injury suffered just before training camp that sidelined him four months. He appeared in only 30 games and, despite a few strong performances in the first-round series against San Antonio, scouts remain uncertain about his trajectory. “He has intangibles you can’t teach, but he has to learn how to use them against bigger, stronger athletes,” one evaluator told Oregon Live.

Williams Heads to Free Agency

Portland must also decide on unrestricted free agent center Robert Williams III, 28. Limited by a minutes cap, Williams still logged 59 games—his second-highest total—and assumed a larger postseason role when rookie Donovan Clingan struggled. Williams said he “found another home in Portland” and is willing to aid the rebuild, but acknowledged that contract talks will determine his future.

Avdija Emerges as Franchise Cornerstone

Forward Deni Avdija, 25, earned his first All-Star nod while operating as a point forward despite Portland’s poor floor spacing. Scouts debate whether he projects as a top option or elite secondary piece, but the team views him as a building block. Avdija expects greater defensive attention next season and plans to improve his off-hand drives, defense and leadership.

Krejci’s Contract Flexibility Appeals to Team

Sharpshooter Vit Krejci was acquired before February’s trade deadline for perimeter depth. A late-season slump—possibly linked to a left calf bruise—dampened his impact, yet the Blazers like his defensive profile, outside shooting and team-friendly deal, which is partially guaranteed for 2026-27 and non-guaranteed for 2027-28.

Layoffs Reach Scouting Department

The organization’s recent layoffs extended beyond business and media operations. Longtime scout and WNBA legend Tina Thompson, known for her close relationship with former Blazer Damian Lillard, was among those let go.
