Pistons’ Langdon Stresses Patience, Says Team Will Hold Off on “Big Splash” Moves

The Detroit Pistons reached the postseason last spring after winning just 14 games the previous year, a turnaround that might suggest an aggressive summer strategy. President of basketball operations Trajan Langdon disagrees, telling The Athletic’s Hunter Patterson that 2024 is “not the offseason to make a splash.”
Langdon said Detroit could have packaged young players to chase an established star, but leadership chose instead to “see what those guys’ ceilings are” before committing major resources. “It’s too early for us to truly understand the best way to press the gas pedal right now,” he added.
The club originally intended to re-sign guard Malik Beasley, but a federal gambling investigation derailed those talks. Detroit pivoted by adding Caris LeVert in free agency, acquiring Duncan Robinson via sign-and-trade, and retaining center Paul Reed as front-court depth. Langdon characterized the moves as steady steps designed to support internal growth rather than headline-grabbing transactions.
“We want to put players around our core that can help them grow, develop, and reach their potential,” Langdon said. For now, the organization intends to monitor its young roster and determine a future timetable for more aggressive roster building.
