On January 22, 2006, Kobe Bryant authored one of basketball’s most memorable nights, scoring 81 points to propel the Los Angeles Lakers to a 122-104 comeback victory over the Toronto Raptors at Staples Center.

The performance remains the second-highest single-game scoring mark in league history, surpassed only by Wilt Chamberlain’s 100-point effort in 1962. Bryant’s production was critical: Los Angeles trailed by 14 at halftime and by 18 early in the third quarter before the All-Star guard took control.

Bryant poured in 55 points after the break, including 23 over the final nine minutes. He finished 28-for-46 from the field (60.9 percent), 7-for-13 from three-point range (53.8 percent) and 18-for-20 at the foul line (90.0 percent), silencing frequent critiques of his shooting efficiency.

Toronto tried multiple defenders—Morris Peterson, Mike James, Joey Graham and Jalen Rose among them—but none could slow the onslaught. The barrage arrived barely a month after Bryant’s 62-point outing in three quarters against the Dallas Mavericks, a night he voluntarily ended early despite assistant coach Brian Shaw offering him more minutes. Bryant later predicted he would have another extraordinary game; his 81 proved that forecast correct.

Looking back on his career, Bryant often cited the 81-point evening as his favorite performance, edging out the 60 points he posted in his 2016 farewell game.
