Former Los Angeles Lakers center Elden Campbell, a key member of the franchise throughout the 1990s, has died at the age of 57, his family confirmed.
According to Campbell’s sister, Sandra, the 15-year NBA veteran collapsed shortly after returning to shore from a fishing outing in Florida earlier this week. She told The New York Post the incident was unexpected and that Campbell “wasn’t sick,” adding the family does not yet know what triggered the medical emergency.
Longtime Laker and NBA Champion
Campbell, an Inglewood native who starred at Morningside High School, spent his first nine professional seasons with the Lakers after being selected 27th overall in the 1990 NBA Draft. The 6-foot-11 big man later played for several teams and earned an NBA championship ring with the Detroit Pistons in 2004, defeating his former club in the Finals.
Outpouring of Tributes
News of Campbell’s passing prompted tributes from former teammates and fans. Hall of Famer Magic Johnson and radio analyst Mychal Thompson posted remembrances on X, while Cedric Ceballos shared a tribute on Instagram, reflecting Campbell’s popularity within the Lakers community.
Further details regarding the cause of death are pending as family members await additional information.
