CLEVELAND — Donovan Mitchell scored 37 points and the Cleveland Cavaliers pulled away late to defeat the Los Angeles Clippers 120-105 on Sunday night.
The All-Star guard added eight rebounds, six assists and sank five three-pointers. His surge came after the Clippers trimmed a 13-point deficit to a single point in the third quarter. Mitchell responded with back-to-back three-point plays, a deep three and two assists during a three-minute stretch that fueled a 15-3 run. Cleveland never trailed again.
Evan Mobley finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds, while DeAndre Hunter supplied 17 off the bench. The Cavaliers (12-6) completed a six-game homestand at 4-2 despite playing without Jarrett Allen, Lonzo Ball, Sam Merrill and Craig Porter Jr. Head coach J.B. Bickerstaff has already utilized 10 different starting lineups this season.
Los Angeles (5-12) leaned on center Ivica Zubac, who posted 33 points and 18 rebounds. Kawhi Leonard, back from an ankle sprain, scored 20. James Harden tallied 19 after a 55-point outing in Charlotte but missed all eight of his attempts from beyond the arc.
Veteran guard Chris Paul received a warm ovation in his first appearance since announcing his retirement over the weekend, handing out five assists in 17 minutes for the Clippers.
The Cavaliers travel next to face the Orlando Magic on Wednesday, while the Clippers continue their road trip Tuesday against the Milwaukee Bucks.
