The Sacramento Kings are evaluating a potential move for free-agent forward-center Precious Achiuwa, NBA insider Jake Fischer reported. League sources told ClutchPoints’ Brett Siegel that undrafted rookie Isaac Jones would likely be waived if Sacramento adds Achiuwa to its full 15-man roster.
Sacramento has opened the season 2-4 and has frequently used smaller lineups, with DeMar DeRozan logging minutes at power forward. Depth up front is further strained by Keegan Murray’s absence because of a thumb injury, leaving Domantas Sabonis as the club’s lone consistent interior scoring option.
Achiuwa, 26, was released by the Miami Heat late in training camp as the franchise sought to avoid the luxury tax. The 6-foot-8 big man owns career averages of 7.6 points and 5.7 rebounds in 320 regular-season games with Miami, Toronto and New York. He appeared in 57 contests for the Knicks last season, starting 10 times.
Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said before opening night that the decision to cut Achiuwa was driven by financial considerations rather than on-court performance. “It is tough, especially because we spent time with him four years ago,” Spoelstra noted. “But that’s just where we are right now with the roster.”
During the preseason, Achiuwa averaged 4.8 points and 5.3 rebounds in 11.7 minutes per game.
