Winning NBA Championship Takes Priority Over MVP For Luka Doncic

Los Angeles Lakers guard Luka Doncic says capturing an NBA title outweighs any individual honor, including the league’s Most Valuable Player award.
Speaking in Spanish with Jorge Quiroga of Marca, the 27-year-old acknowledged he would “love to win all the awards,” but stressed that “the important thing is the ring.” The comments, translated into English, reinforce the stance Doncic has maintained since arriving in the NBA.
The 2025-26 campaign was statistically dominant for Doncic. He topped the league in scoring at 33.5 points per game, earned his sixth All-NBA First Team selection and placed fourth in MVP voting behind Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Nikola Jokic and Victor Wembanyama. Despite those accolades, he has never finished higher than third in the MVP race.
Doncic’s focus now shifts to an offseason he labeled “very important” for the Lakers. Los Angeles faces key roster decisions on guard Austin Reaves and forward LeBron James, while the front office works to add complementary pieces around its superstar backcourt leader. The Lakers finished the season outside the championship picture in a Western Conference expected to remain competitive with the Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs projected as long-term contenders.
Doncic called the recent season “bad” solely because the Lakers fell short of winning the Larry O’Brien Trophy. With strategic roster moves and his continued elite play, the franchise hopes to bridge the gap between playoff participant and title threat.
