LeBron James declined to meet with the Los Angeles Lakers before the start of 2026 free agency because he had already decided to leave the franchise after eight seasons, according to ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne.
Shelburne reported that the Lakers attempted to schedule a videoconference with the 41-year-old forward through his agent, Rich Paul, one week before the market opened. Paul told the club James was “not available,” offering no explanation at the time. Sources on both sides said there were no formal or informal contract offers, no conversations about a long-term vision, and no face-to-face or virtual discussions during that period.
Paul later told ESPN the call was unnecessary because James was “a thousand percent certain” he wanted to move on. That stance marked a sharp shift from “about 80 percent” confidence in returning to Los Angeles only a few weeks earlier, Paul added.
On his podcast, Paul said the decision was influenced by the Lakers’ focus on constructing the roster around Luka Dončić, leaving James to pursue the final stage of his career elsewhere.
James, who spent eight seasons in purple and gold and delivered the franchise’s 18th championship in 2020, will enter his 24th NBA season with a new team.
