The Sacramento Kings have waived six-time All-Star DeMar DeRozan after unsuccessful efforts to trade the veteran forward, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported on Wednesday.
Because no team claimed DeRozan’s contract, the 36-year-old is expected to clear waivers and enter unrestricted free agency. League sources anticipate immediate interest from multiple playoff contenders, with the Miami Heat considered a leading suitor. The South Florida Sun-Sentinel previously noted that Miami would pursue DeRozan if he became available.
DeRozan appeared in 77 games for Sacramento last season, averaging 18.4 points, 4.1 assists and 2.9 rebounds while remaining one of the NBA’s most reliable late-game scorers. He will turn 37 in August.
Sacramento had explored trade possibilities with DeRozan’s representatives but ultimately opted to release him, a move that provides the Kings with additional salary-cap flexibility as they reshape the roster around a younger core.
Rival teams seeking veteran scoring, leadership and half-court creation are expected to contact DeRozan once he officially becomes a free agent.
