The Golden State Warriors are seriously evaluating the possibility of signing LeBron James when the 20-time All-Star enters unrestricted free agency this summer, league insiders Marc Stein and Jake Fischer reported.

James, 40, just completed his 23rd NBA season and can choose a new team for his 24th campaign. While staying with the Los Angeles Lakers remains widely viewed as his preferred outcome after eight years in purple and gold, sources told Stein and Fischer that Golden State is “legitimately interested” in pairing James with Stephen Curry, Jimmy Butler and Draymond Green under head coach Steve Kerr.

Commuting Pitch and Financial Hurdles

The Warriors’ reported proposal includes the idea that James could continue living in Los Angeles and commute to the Bay Area, limiting disruption to his family. However, salary-cap constraints present a major obstacle. Golden State currently lacks cap space, and multiple reports indicate James is reluctant to accept a substantial pay cut.

Los Angeles is one of the few franchises positioned to offer the four-time MVP a maximum-level contract, yet the Lakers must balance that commitment with several other roster decisions and potential upgrades. The Warriors previously contacted the Lakers about a trade for James, signaling long-standing interest, but no deal materialized.

Other Voices Weigh In

Hall of Famer Charles Barkley recently stated on television that neither the Lakers nor the Warriors represents the best landing spot for James, contending the superstar has “one clear option” elsewhere. Barkley did not elaborate on-air.
