Legendary investor Warren Buffett praised Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James for his decision-making both on the court and in the boardroom during an interview with Sean Gregory of Time magazine.

Buffett, who has met with the four-time NBA champion several times, told the publication, “The guy is smart. He’s a smart guy on the court, he’s a smart guy off the court.”

James, 41, is preparing for his 24th NBA season after guiding the Lakers to the 2026 postseason. Beyond basketball, he has become a billionaire through investments in global sports brands, technology ventures and development projects in his hometown of Akron, Ohio. Buffett noted that James relied on longtime friends to manage his business affairs, used contractual leverage to choose his NBA destinations and consistently “kept the main thing the main thing” despite intense public scrutiny.

The forward told Time he will know it is time to retire when his passion for pre-game and practice routines fades. “When I’m not in love with getting to the arenas on game days five hours before to start my preparation … then I know I’ll be done,” he said. “Because then I’m going to start cheating the game.”

James is expected to remain active in business once his playing career ends, a path Buffett indicated he would continue to support.
