New Los Angeles Lakers acquisition Walker Kessler will suit up in jersey No. 14 when the 2025-26 NBA season begins, the center confirmed in a team video released this week.
The 24-year-old wore No. 24 during his four seasons with the Utah Jazz, but that number is retired by the Lakers in honor of the late Kobe Bryant. Kessler’s collegiate number, 13, is also unavailable in Los Angeles, having been set aside for Hall of Fame center Wilt Chamberlain.
“I chose 14 because it was my USA number at the World Cup,” Kessler said in the “Get to Know” segment on the Lakers’ YouTube channel. “Seeing my name on a Lakers jersey is like a dream. It’s surreal, so I’m very grateful to be here.”
Kessler wore No. 14 while representing Team USA at the 2023 FIBA World Cup, a roster that featured new Lakers teammate Austin Reaves. The Auburn and North Carolina product averaged 8.9 points, 8.4 rebounds and 2.4 blocks per game last season with Utah.
Los Angeles acquired Kessler this summer believing he can thrive as a pick-and-roll partner for Luka Doncic and Reaves, provide second-chance opportunities through offensive rebounding, and anchor the defense as a rim protector. The 7-footer recently underscored his defensive mindset, stating he would rather record a game-winning block than score a decisive basket.
Kessler now begins a high-profile chapter in Los Angeles, where his impact will be measured more by on-court production than the digits on his uniform.
