Los Angeles still eyeing defensive wing after early offseason reshuffle
lakers-continue-search-for-defensive-wing-offseason

The Los Angeles Lakers, who opened free agency with several high-profile additions, are continuing to hunt for a defensive-minded wing, league sources told The Athletic.

General manager Rob Pelinka has already completed a sign-and-trade for center Walker Kessler and signed guards Quentin Grimes and Collin Sexton along with stretch big Sandro Mamukelashvili. Despite those moves, the front office has prioritized adding a young perimeter stopper before training camp.

Jonathan Kuminga under consideration

Among the names being evaluated is forward Jonathan Kuminga, according to the report. The former Golden State Warrior and Atlanta Hawk became an unrestricted free agent when Atlanta declined his $24.3 million team option. Kuminga, 23, would give Los Angeles size on the wing and potential long-term upside.

Because the Lakers are currently limited to offering the veteran minimum, any agreement would likely rely on the franchise’s available minutes and national exposure as potential selling points. Strong play in Los Angeles has historically led to larger contracts for previous minimum signees.

Other targets and cap maneuvers

The club has also been linked to Ziaire Williams, who enjoyed a breakout year with the Brooklyn Nets, and Matisse Thybulle, a proven perimeter defender. At present, Jarred Vanderbilt and Jake LaRavia are the only true big wings under contract. A waive-and-stretch of Vanderbilt could open roughly $7 million in cap space, while trade options remain limited by the team’s modest draft capital.

Ayton slated to back up Kessler

Despite speculation that Deandre Ayton might be moved, the Lakers currently project the former No. 1 overall pick as Kessler’s primary backup at center.

The front office is expected to keep exploring the market for wing help as roster construction continues.
