Los Angeles, CA — The Los Angeles Lakers have secured center Walker Kessler from the Utah Jazz in a sign-and-trade deal that cost two unprotected first-round selections and two first-round pick swaps.
According to The Athletic, team officials view the 7-footer as an ideal complement to backcourt stars Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves. Kessler, 24, agreed to a contract below the maximum salary, a structure the front office believes will preserve flexibility for additional moves.

Sources told The Athletic’s Dan Woike that Kessler’s skill set—elite rim protection, transition rim-running and league-leading offensive rebounding in 2025—fits precisely with the playmaking of Doncic and Reaves. General manager Rob Pelinka’s group now holds no tradable first-round assets for the next seven seasons after parting with the quartet of future picks.
Roster Moves Around the Deal
By landing Kessler on a below-max contract, the Lakers also added guards Collin Sexton and Quentin Grimes along with stretch big Sandro Mamukelashvili in free agency, moves designed to deepen the rotation around Doncic.
End of the LeBron James Era
The transaction comes as LeBron James informed the organization he will not return for the 2026-27 campaign. Following that announcement, Doncic posted a message on social media thanking his former teammate.
