Los Angeles Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka said the franchise must prioritize internal player development while operating under the NBA’s tighter collective bargaining agreement, which imposes severe financial penalties on high-spending teams.

Speaking at his end-of-season media briefing, Pelinka noted that nearly every player on the current roster will hit unrestricted free agency this summer. Despite ample salary-cap room and three tradable first-round selections, he described the “double-apron” threshold as an almost hard cap, making low-cost roster contributions essential.

Pelinka pointed to forward Rui Hachimura and rookie guard Adou Thiero as recent examples of progress under head coach JJ Redick’s staff. He added that ownership, led by Jeanie Buss and team president Tim Harris, is prepared to bolster coaching and front-office resources dedicated to development, drawing inspiration from the Los Angeles Dodgers’ farm-system model.

The general manager said the front office will explore multiple avenues to add talent—draft picks, trades and free agency—but any moves will revolve around star guard Luka Doncic, whom the organization views as its long-term centerpiece.
