Oklahoma City, OK — Los Angeles Lakers guard Marcus Smart said he holds himself responsible for the team’s offensive difficulties after a 108-90 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 1 of the Western Conference semifinals on May 5, 2026.
Playing without injured superstar Luka Dončić, the Lakers shot 41.2% from the field and finished 4-for-15 behind the arc. Smart, who matched those shooting numbers personally, called his performance “unacceptable” and vowed to improve.
“We can score the ball — we just have to do it,” Smart told reporters at Paycom Center. “Rui [Hachimura] missed some shots he usually makes, I missed some shots I usually make. I take full accountability for it. It starts with me.”
Head coach JJ Redick and LeBron James echoed Smart’s assessment, noting that the club generated quality looks but failed to convert. James added that consistent perimeter shooting is critical to freeing space inside for himself and guard Austin Reaves.
Reaves also shouldered blame after scoring eight points on 3-for-16 shooting. “I simply have to be better,” he said.
The Lakers trail the best-of-seven series 0-1. Game 2 is set for Thursday night in Oklahoma City.
