The Dallas Mavericks have engaged the Los Angeles Clippers in preliminary talks centered on a trade for forward Kawhi Leonard, The Athletic reported.
According to the outlet, a potential package would move P.J. Washington, Klay Thompson and draft compensation to Los Angeles in exchange for the two-time NBA Finals MVP. Whether negotiations advance beyond the exploratory stage remains uncertain.
Dallas has limited draft assets available, and team president Masai Ujiri has emphasized the need to construct a sustainable contender around No. 1 overall pick Cooper Flagg. Even so, a core featuring Flagg, Leonard and Kyrie Irving would be notable if the Mavericks can strike a deal without overextending their future resources.
Leonard, who turns 35 this week, is coming off one of his best seasons, averaging 27.9 points, 6.4 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 1.9 steals on 50.5 percent shooting while appearing in 65 games—his highest total since 2016-17.
While the Clippers have maintained a preference to keep Leonard, multiple teams, including the Toronto Raptors and now the Mavericks, have explored trade scenarios involving the veteran forward.
