Magic Johnson Urges Lakers and LeBron James to Settle Future Before Draft, Free Agency

NBA Hall of Famer Magic Johnson said the Los Angeles Lakers and LeBron James must clarify whether they will remain together “soon,” warning that indecision could hamper the team’s offseason plans.

Speaking Wednesday on ESPN’s “Get Up,” Johnson noted that the Cleveland Cavaliers are positioned to contend immediately and could entice James, who is expected to reach unrestricted free agency this summer.

“That’s not a bad place,” Johnson said of Cleveland. “They’re already set up to win, and you put LeBron in that lineup, that’s a really good lineup and a chance to really do something in the East. But we don’t know what LeBron wants to do and we don’t know what the Lakers want to do.”

Johnson added that new Lakers majority owner Mark Walter must reach a resolution with James before the NBA Draft and the July 1 opening of free agency. “The draft is coming, free agency is coming,” Johnson said. “Hey LeBron, what do you want to do? Hey Mark Walter, what do you want? They’ve got to make that decision before the draft and before free agency.”

Roster implications

The Lakers risk losing prospective free-agent targets and trade options if James’ status remains unclear, Johnson cautioned. Front-office executives fear that delay could limit opportunities to upgrade the roster around Luka Doncic and the rest of the core.

James expected to weigh options

James, 41, is coming off his 23rd NBA season. League sources believe he will monitor the moves made by general manager Rob Pelinka to determine whether Los Angeles can narrow the gap on Western Conference powers such as the Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs.

Summer routine fuels speculation

After the Lakers’ second-round postseason exit, James posted videos of himself practicing golf, fueling speculation about retirement. He later downplayed that interpretation, saying the hobby is part of his offseason recovery process rather than a signal he is ready to leave the game.

James is expected to meet with Los Angeles officials in the coming weeks. Whether that conversation ends in a new contract or a parting of ways, Johnson believes the discussion cannot wait.
