Magic Johnson Thanks LeBron James and Rich Paul as Eight-Year Lakers Era Ends

Former Los Angeles Lakers president of basketball operations Magic Johnson publicly thanked LeBron James and agent Rich Paul on June 30, 2026, acknowledging the end of James’ eight-season tenure with the franchise.
In a message posted on social media, Johnson recalled the July 2018 meeting in which James agreed to join the Lakers and credited the four-time NBA champion with “creating a whole new era” for the team. Johnson highlighted the 2020 NBA title, secured alongside Anthony Davis, as well as James’ other milestones in purple and gold.
James’ arrival followed two difficult seasons for the Lakers after Kobe Bryant’s retirement. The forward’s decision to sign in 2018 restored the club’s prominence, culminating in the 2020 championship inside the Orlando bubble, the NBA’s all-time scoring record being set in 2024, and a historic father-son appearance with Bronny James during the 2025-26 campaign.
At eight consecutive years, James’ stint in Los Angeles was the longest with a single franchise in his career. Johnson’s post came shortly after reports confirmed the 39-year-old will continue playing elsewhere when free agency opens.
The Lakers issued a statement expressing gratitude for James’ contributions; the veteran replied on social media, calling it “an honor” to wear the iconic uniform.
James is expected to have his jersey retired at Crypto.com Arena in the future, capping a chapter that Johnson described as “undoubtedly successful” for both player and franchise.
