Los Angeles Lakers legend Earvin “Magic” Johnson has offered his early assessment of the 2026 NBA Finals, set to begin this week between the New York Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs.
Posting a series of messages on X (formerly Twitter) on June 1, 2026, Johnson highlighted several matchups and storylines he believes will shape the best-of-seven series:
Perimeter shooting vs. interior defense
Johnson noted that Victor Wembanyama’s rim protection was decisive in San Antonio’s Western Conference Finals win over the Oklahoma City Thunder. However, he cautioned that the 7-foot-4 rookie may be forced away from the basket against New York because of the Knicks’ floor-spacing combination of Karl-Anthony Towns and OG Anunoby, both reliable three-point threats.
Who guards Wembanyama?
The Hall of Famer questioned which Knicks defender will be assigned to the Spurs’ star. While regular-season data points to Anunoby as one of the league’s most effective Wembanyama stoppers, Johnson suggested New York’s defensive task will be tougher than anything it faced in earlier playoff rounds against Atlanta, Philadelphia and Cleveland.
Rest vs. rhythm
Johnson also weighed the impact of scheduling. The Knicks will enter Game 1 after an eight-day layoff following consecutive series sweeps, while the Spurs have just three days off after a grueling seven-game battle with the Thunder. “What team will be affected the most?” he asked his 5.8 million followers.
High viewership expected
The matchup marks New York’s first Finals appearance since 1999 and San Antonio’s first trip since 2014. Johnson predicted the combination of surging form on both sides and the league’s fresh championship landscape would make the series “one of the most watched” Finals in recent memory.
Regardless of the outcome, the 2026 champion will become the eighth different title-winner in as many seasons, extending the NBA’s streak of parody that began after the Golden State Warriors’ last repeat in 2018.
Game 1 is scheduled for Thursday at Madison Square Garden, where Jalen Brunson and the Knicks will look to capitalize on home-court advantage against Wembanyama, Devin Vassell and the rest of San Antonio’s rapidly maturing roster.
