Luka Doncic rarely admits to feeling butterflies, but the Los Angeles Lakers guard revealed that stepping onto the floor for his first game in purple and gold was a notable exception.
During a June 16, 2026 appearance on the Spanish YouTube channel Drafteados, the 27-year-old was asked to recall moments that made him nervous. “Maybe my first Lakers game,” Doncic replied, according to a translation shared by the account Luka Updates on social media. “But not much else.”
Doncic’s Lakers debut came on Feb. 10, 2025, at Crypto.com Arena, four days after he was dealt from the Dallas Mavericks in a last-minute, trade-deadline blockbuster. Still recovering from a calf strain, the four-time All-NBA selection logged 23 minutes against the Utah Jazz, posting 14 points, five rebounds and four assists in a 114-102 victory.
The mid-season move from Dallas to Los Angeles generated intense scrutiny. Reports surfaced criticizing the Slovenian star’s conditioning, and public opinion dipped even as many observers questioned the Mavericks’ decision to part with their franchise player. Transitioning from a mid-market team to the globally recognized Lakers brand only heightened the spotlight.
Any early anxiety proved fleeting. In his first full season with Los Angeles, Doncic finished fourth in 2025-26 MVP voting and secured another First-Team All-NBA nod.
Looking ahead, the guard has stayed in touch with teammates Austin Reaves and LeBron James as the July 2026 free-agency period approaches. According to reports, most of those conversations have centered on their shared interest in golf rather than contract matters.
