LeBron James Undecided on Future, Report Indicates No Interest in Farewell Tour

Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James has not decided whether he will play a 24th NBA season and is not seeking a league-wide farewell tour, according to a report from The Athletic published Monday.

Reporters Dan Woike and Sam Amick, citing anonymous team and league sources, wrote that James “has made no decisions regarding his future” as he approaches unrestricted free agency this summer. Those sources added that the 21-time All-Star has expressed no desire for the type of season-long send-off that Kobe Bryant received in 2015-16.

James, 41, is completing his 23rd season and his current contract expires after the playoffs. The Lakers open a first-round series against the Houston Rockets later this week.

The Athletic report notes that James historically waits until the offseason to discuss career plans with his family. Retirement “remains a real possibility,” the outlet said, while a return could involve re-signing with Los Angeles or joining another franchise.

The Lakers face multiple roster decisions this summer, including new deals for Austin Reaves and potential free agents Rui Hachimura and Luke Kennard. Contract size and roster construction are expected to influence any negotiations with James.

Asked earlier this season about retirement or a farewell tour, James said he had not considered either topic because he had yet to hold those discussions at home.
