LeBron James Calls Austin Reaves’ Five-Year Climb With Lakers “Nothing Short of Amazing”

Los Angeles, CA — LeBron James said he has enjoyed watching Austin Reaves transform from an undrafted signing in 2021 into a key contributor who flirted with All-Star status this season.
“Just seeing AR grow over, what, five years? It’s been nothing short of amazing,” James told reporters after the Lakers’ season ended. “He’s a hard worker, loves the game, wants to get better and isn’t afraid of constructive criticism.”
Rapid Rise After Going Undrafted
Reaves entered the league on a two-way contract with the Lakers in 2021. The deal was converted to a standard NBA contract before opening night of his rookie year. Since then, the 6-foot-5 guard has advanced from reserve minutes to a starting role and, this season, produced career-best averages of 23.3 points, 4.7 rebounds and 5.5 assists despite battling multiple injuries.
LeBron Saw Potential Early
James said he recognized both the talent and the willingness to work when Reaves first arrived. “I knew he could be a big-time player for our ballclub if he just got the opportunity and gained confidence in himself,” the four-time MVP explained. “He’s obviously shown it.”
Uncertain Offseason Ahead
Both players are expected to reach unrestricted free agency this summer, leaving open the possibility they could part ways. James, 40, has yet to commit to a 24th NBA season, while Reaves is considered one of the top guards on the market and is already drawing outside interest.
Regardless of what happens, James said the guard’s progress speaks for itself. “To see where he is today is awesome,” he added.
The two last shared a celebratory embrace on Nov. 18, 2025, during a home game at Crypto.com Arena, a moment emblematic of the partnership that helped propel Reaves’ swift ascent.
