LeBron James is expected to be one of the headline stories of the upcoming NBA offseason, but league sources doubt the veteran forward will accept a steep pay cut to change teams.
The 42-year-old can become an unrestricted free agent after completing his eighth season with the Los Angeles Lakers. While a return to Los Angeles remains possible, James will have the option to negotiate with any franchise.
Speculation has connected the four-time MVP to the Cleveland Cavaliers, Golden State Warriors and Miami Heat—clubs with limited salary-cap flexibility. During an appearance on ESPN Cleveland, reporter Brian Windhorst noted that Cleveland could currently offer only about $3 million, a fraction of the approximately $54 million James earned this season. “To my knowledge, LeBron is not prepared to take that type of pay cut,” Windhorst said.
James no longer commands a maximum contract, yet his market value remains well above the league minimum. Most of the rumored destinations would need to clear additional cap space or pursue a sign-and-trade to meet his expected salary range.
The Lakers possess considerably more cap room than many suitors, while a team such as the Cavaliers would have to rework its roster to compete financially. The precise figure James will seek, and whether a sign-and-trade becomes necessary, are still unknown.
James recently reflected on his tenure in Los Angeles, identifying a personal favorite moment among numerous milestones achieved during his eight seasons with the franchise. Details of that highlight were not disclosed.
