Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James acknowledged the endless comparisons to Michael Jordan and said he hopes his own play in the No. 23 jersey has met the Chicago Bulls legend’s standards.
Speaking with ESPN’s Dave McMenamin, James remarked that measuring the two superstars against each other is difficult because “our games are totally different.”
Different styles, shared greatness
“There are a lot of things that MJ did better than I do, and I think there are some things I do better than him,” James said. “I’ve been a point-forward my whole life. I’ve always looked for the pass. MJ looked for the shot.”
James praised Jordan’s mid-range jumper, post game and “unbelievable will to win,” adding that he grew up analyzing every part of Jordan’s offensive repertoire. “We’re both great basketball players,” he said, calling each of them “one-of-one” talents.
Wearing No. 23 as a tribute
James, who chose No. 23 in honor of Jordan, said the ongoing greatest-of-all-time debate—often reduced to “barbershop talk”—frequently pits fans against each other. “You can love both of us without trying to tear down the other person,” he noted. “But I hope I made him proud at least, wearing that No. 23.”
Jordan shared similar view earlier this season
Earlier in the season, Jordan offered a comparable perspective when asked about being ranked against James and the late Kobe Bryant. Jordan said it is hard to make direct comparisons because each player starred in a different era.
The conversation between James and McMenamin aired as the 39-year-old Lakers star continues his 21st NBA season, while Jordan, now 61, remains an enduring benchmark for greatness. Despite fierce online debates, both players have expressed respect and admiration for one another’s accomplishments.
