LOS ANGELES — Moments after the Los Angeles Lakers were eliminated from the 2026 NBA Playoffs, forward LeBron James said he has not decided whether he will return for a 24th season.
“With my future, I don’t know,” James told reporters late Monday at Crypto.com Arena. “We’re still fresh from losing. I don’t know what the future holds for me as it stands right now tonight.”
The 41-year-old completed his record-setting 23rd NBA season as the first player in league history to reach that mark. The Lakers fell 4-0 to the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference semifinals, ending their year in the second round.
Free agency looms
James will enter the summer as an unrestricted free agent, giving him the option to sign with any team if he chooses to continue playing. Vice president of basketball operations Rob Pelinka has said he hopes James retires in a Lakers uniform, but contract terms have not been discussed publicly.
The Lakers are also expected to pursue a new deal with guard Austin Reaves, who is headed for a sizable payday. A near-maximum contract for James could reduce the club’s flexibility in rounding out its roster.
Possible destinations
Speculation has linked James to several franchises, including his hometown Cleveland Cavaliers, as well as the Golden State Warriors and New York Knicks. No formal meetings have been scheduled.
“Father Time” remarks
Despite his age and workload, James said this season that he believes he has “defeated Father Time,” noting that he still ranks among the league’s top performers.
James reiterated that he will take time with his family before making any decision. “I’ve got to go back and recalibrate with my family, talk with them, spend some time with them, and when the time comes, you guys will know what I decide to do,” he said.
