During Game 5 of the Western Conference first-round series on April 30, Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James confronted Houston Rockets center Alperen Sengun over a foul dispute captured on the arena broadcast.
The exchange occurred as James prepared to shoot a free throw at Toyota Center. Television mics picked up the 41-year-old addressing Sengun after the Houston All-Star appeared to label the whistle a “soft” call. “You’re the only person out here that ain’t allowed to say that,” James told him, according to video posted by BallIsLife.
Sengun, who relies heavily on interior play, has drawn and contested several physical fouls throughout the series. Lakers center Deandre Ayton has matched that physicality, leading to repeated contact in the paint.
The confrontation highlighted rising tension in a matchup that has grown increasingly physical. Los Angeles once led the best-of-seven series 3-0, but Houston has taken the past two games to force a Game 6 on Friday night, again at Toyota Center. A Rockets win would send the series back to Los Angeles for a decisive Game 7.
Asked separately about Houston players claiming the Rockets are “obviously the better team,” James declined to engage, maintaining his usual postseason stance of ignoring outside remarks.
Tipoff for Game 6 is set for Friday at 7:00 p.m. local time.
