Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James praised New York Knicks guard Josh Hart, describing him as a player whose value extends far beyond the box score.
Speaking on the latest episode of his “Mind the Game” podcast, James said Hart “continues to get better and better,” crediting the 31-year-old’s versatility and effort plays for helping the Knicks reach the 2026 NBA Finals.
Impact without scoring
James compared Hart to Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green and former Lakers teammate Alex Caruso—players known for making “winning plays.” According to James, Hart can post modest point totals but still swing games with rebounds, assists, hustle for loose balls and overall competitiveness.
Early years in Los Angeles
Hart began his NBA career with the Lakers after being selected 30th overall in the 2017 NBA Draft. He played two seasons in Los Angeles before being included in the 2019 trade package that brought Anthony Davis to the Lakers.
Key role in New York’s title push
Now in his third season with New York, Hart has become integral to a Knicks squad that leads the San Antonio Spurs 2–0 in the best-of-seven Finals. Game 3 is set for June 8, 2026, at Madison Square Garden.
James said every championship team needs players like Hart, noting the guard’s elite rebounding for his position, physical defense against larger opponents and ability to hit open three-pointers.
The Knicks’ postseason surge, fueled in part by Hart’s all-around contributions, has caught James’s attention. “You can plug him into any franchise, any team, and they’re gonna win because those guys just make winning plays,” he said.
