Los Angeles Lakers two-way forward AK Okereke, who has appeared in every game of the California Classic Summer League, says his value to the organization will come from being able to fill multiple roles on both ends of the floor.
Speaking with Khobi Price of the California Post, the 6-foot-7, 244-pound wing described himself as a player who can shift from the perimeter to the paint, handle the ball, space the floor and defend several positions. “My strength is versatility,” he said, adding that he is comfortable sliding to a small-ball center spot if needed, creating offense for teammates or knocking down shots from three-point and mid-range areas. Defensively, he said he prides himself on guarding “different archetypes” and doing “whatever the team needs.”
From Ivy League to Hollywood
Okereke spent three seasons at Cornell University before completing his college career at Vanderbilt, a path mirrored by fellow Lakers two-way player Chris Mañon one year earlier. His most productive campaign came as a junior at Cornell, where he averaged 13.9 points, 4.6 rebounds, 4.1 assists, 1.1 steals and 1.1 blocks, earning All-Ivy League Second-Team honors. As a senior with the Commodores he shot 40 percent from beyond the arc, though on limited attempts, leaving outside shooting consistency as a key developmental target.
Early Summer League Numbers
Through three contests in the California Classic, the 23-year-old is posting 6.7 points and 3.0 rebounds in 16.9 minutes per night. He will continue his audition when the Lakers open play at the Las Vegas Summer League later this week.
Rookie Carr Locked In Amid Roster Headlines
First-round pick Cameron Carr drew most of the buzz in San Francisco, yet revealed he was so focused on preparing for Summer League action that he initially missed news of LeBron James’ decision not to return to the Lakers.
The Lakers hold three two-way slots this season, with Okereke aiming to translate his all-around skill set into a regular role as the organization evaluates talent during July’s showcase events.
