The Los Angeles Lakers plan to explore trade possibilities for Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo when the NBA off-season begins, according to The Athletic’s Dan Woike and Sam Amick.
Previous Deadline Interest
League sources told ESPN’s Shams Charania that the Lakers were among several playoff clubs—including the Minnesota Timberwolves, Cleveland Cavaliers, Boston Celtics and New York Knicks—that pursued Antetokounmpo before February’s trade deadline. Milwaukee ultimately kept the two-time MVP but is still expected to gauge offers this summer while it evaluates a roster considered far from title contention.
Asset Limitations in Los Angeles
Los Angeles can trade three future first-round picks, along with potential pick swaps and second-round selections. The Bucks are believed to be seeking both substantial draft compensation and a young cornerstone player. The Lakers’ most attractive young piece, Austin Reaves, is projected to decline his player option and test unrestricted free agency, limiting the feasibility of a sign-and-trade. Team officials have also expressed a desire to keep Reaves long term.
Antetokounmpo’s Stance on Los Angeles
Antetokounmpo recently voiced a preference for Miami over Los Angeles as a vacation destination, calling L.A. “superficial.” If his feelings extend to a potential workplace, the Lakers could face additional hurdles beyond draft capital and player assets.
The Bucks’ approach, Antetokounmpo’s openness to relocation and the Lakers’ ability to outbid rival suitors will shape one of the off-season’s most closely watched storylines.
