The Los Angeles Lakers are widely projected to keep guard Austin Reaves when he becomes an unrestricted free agent this summer, according to NBA insider Marc Stein.

Reaves, 28, is expected to decline his player option and test the open market after outperforming the four-year, roughly $54 million contract he signed in 2023. Under league rules, he can re-sign with Los Angeles for as much as five years and $241 million.

Outside interest uncertain

Brooklyn and Detroit have been mentioned as possible suitors, with league sources indicating the Nets could favor shorter deals while the Pistons may prioritize trade options to preserve future cap flexibility ahead of extension talks with Jalen Duren and Ausar Thompson. Despite that interest, executives around the league reportedly remain skeptical about their chances of luring Reaves away from the Lakers.

Lakers seen as favorites

Stein cited Reaves’ comfort in Los Angeles and his developing backcourt chemistry with Luka Dončić as primary reasons rival teams believe the shooting guard will ultimately stay put. Whether the Lakers will offer a full maximum contract—or whether Reaves will insist on one—has not yet been determined.

Endorsement from Danny Green

Former Lakers wing Danny Green added his voice to the conversation on 710 AM ESPN Los Angeles, calling Reaves “very special” and “worthy of a max” after two strong seasons.
