The Philadelphia 76ers secured LeBron James in free agency, but team insiders say a realistic title run will materialize only if Joel Embiid stays on the floor.

According to ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne, people close to James revealed that the four-time MVP has long admired Embiid’s skill set and basketball IQ, yet remains wary of the center’s durability. Embiid, the 2023 league MVP, appeared in just 57 regular-season games across the past two campaigns.

Shelburne reported that Embiid played a central role in persuading James to choose Philadelphia, pitching the star on a partnership aimed at capturing James’s fifth championship ring. “It all comes down to Joel,” one league source told Shelburne, emphasizing that a lineup featuring James, Tyrese Maxey, Jaylen Brown, rookie wing VJ Edgecombe and reserve center Adem Bona is unlikely to win it all without a healthy Embiid. “Put a healthy Embiid in that group? That’s a championship team,” the source added.

Embiid’s recent postseason absence stemmed from emergency appendicitis surgery, not his chronic knee issues, Shelburne noted. Still, the center’s limited availability adds risk to James’s decision.

Beyond Embiid’s recruiting effort, relationships also influenced the move. James has longstanding ties to new Sixers executives Bob Myers and Mike Gansey, while agent Rich Paul maintains a strong rapport with owners Josh Harris and David Blitzer.

James’s arrival sets the stage, but Philadelphia’s ultimate success, insiders insist, rests on Embiid’s ability to stay healthy when it matters most.
