The Washington Wizards hold the first overall pick in next week’s NBA Draft, yet the franchise remains tight-lipped about which direction it will take.
According to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, the Wizards continue to conduct in-depth evaluations of top prospects AJ Dybantsa and Darryn Peterson. Both players recently visited the team’s facilities, and Peterson has reportedly canceled meetings with other organizations to concentrate solely on Washington.
Front-office leaders Michael Winger and Will Dawkins, former Oklahoma City executives, have carried over the Thunder’s trademark secrecy. Rival clubs told ESPN they are unsure whether Washington is leaning toward Dybantsa, Peterson or a potential trade involving the No. 1 pick.
Peterson said he was surprised that his introductory session with the Wizards focused more on his character than on-court abilities. The franchise has repeatedly highlighted culture and personality traits as core elements of its rebuilding strategy, mirroring practices common in Oklahoma City.
With draft night approaching, Washington appears content to keep the rest of the NBA in suspense.
