Splitter’s Future Uncertain After Leading Blazers Back to Playoffs

Interim coach Tiago Splitter steered the Portland Trail Blazers to their first postseason berth in five years, but his status beyond this season remains unresolved as new owner Tom Dundon weighs other coaching options.

Contract Question Marks

Multiple reports indicate Dundon is reluctant to meet the typical salary for an NBA head coach, even a first-timer. The owner has publicly said the franchise will consider alternatives before deciding whether to retain Splitter.

Splitter, 41, bought a house in Portland and relocated his family from France last summer after leaving Paris Basketball to join Chauncey Billups’ staff. He said he has grown throughout the season and will rely on “the facts” during his upcoming interview with Dundon.

“Of course I want the job,” Splitter told reporters, adding that he understands Dundon’s decision to speak with several candidates after purchasing the team for $4.25 billion. “Right now, I’m not losing sleep. I’m just trying to finish the season the best I can.”

From Emergency Hire to Locker-Room Favorite

Splitter assumed control before the season’s second game when Billups was arrested on federal gambling charges. He compiled a 42-39 record, earning public backing from players such as Robert Williams, Toumani Camara and Deni Avdija.

“Results speak for themselves,” Avdija said. “He adjusted amazingly through all the lineup changes and got the best out of everybody.”

Respect Around the League

San Antonio Spurs coach Mitch Johnson praised Splitter’s steady approach. “The way they’re playing is a testament to him and the way those guys are fighting for him and each other,” Johnson said.

Scoot Henderson Remains Confident

Third-year guard Scoot Henderson acknowledged his career has not unfolded as expected since being drafted third overall in 2023, yet he still believes he should have been the No. 1 pick ahead of Victor Wembanyama. “I bring that winning mentality, my confidence and my approach to the game,” Henderson said.

Portland opens its first-round series against Wembanyama’s team later this week.
