Mavericks Tentatively Select Former Valley View Mall Site for New Arena

The Dallas Mavericks have reached a preliminary deal to build a new arena and entertainment district on the 104-acre site where Valley View Mall once stood, moving the NBA franchise away from downtown for the first time in its 46-year history.

The location, about 13 miles north of downtown Dallas, was demolished three years ago. In a statement, the team said the property “meets most of the criteria established at the outset of our evaluation process” and offers “the strongest opportunity” to keep the club within city limits.

Timeline and next steps

The tentative schedule calls for the arena to open by July 28, 2031, coinciding with the expiration of the Mavericks’ lease at American Airlines Center. Team CEO Rick Welts, who is overseeing the project, notified city manager Kimberly Bizor Tolbert of the decision on Monday.

Factors behind the choice

Dallas officials had proposed a downtown alternative, but sources told The Dallas Morning News the franchise doubted that plan could meet the 2031 deadline. The organization also emphasized the chance to create a “vibrant mixed-use destination” featuring restaurants, entertainment venues, public green spaces and family-focused amenities.

Irving remains another option

While Valley View is the leading candidate, the club is also evaluating a 259-acre tract in nearby Irving owned by Las Vegas Sands. Team governor Patrick Dumont serves as chairman of the casino and resort company. Although Irving is technically outside Dallas, it sits slightly closer to downtown than the Valley View parcel.

The Mavericks have played in downtown Dallas since the franchise’s inception in 1980.
