The San Antonio Spurs have hired former Chicago Bulls coach Billy Donovan to serve as lead assistant under head coach Mitch Johnson, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported on Tuesday.
Donovan, 61, has been an NBA head coach since 2015. He guided the Oklahoma City Thunder for five seasons before taking over the Bulls, whom he led for the past six campaigns. His career record at the professional level stands at 469–413.
Before entering the NBA, Donovan spent 19 years running the men’s program at the University of Florida. During that tenure he captured two national championships, earned SEC Coach of the Year honors three times and established a reputation for building strong relationships with players.
Donovan left Chicago following the 2025/26 season and was widely viewed as a leading candidate for the Orlando Magic’s head-coaching vacancy. That job ultimately went to former Spurs top assistant Sean Sweeney.
His arrival in San Antonio adds another experienced voice to Johnson’s staff as the Spurs continue to reshape their coaching ranks.
