The Philadelphia 76ers have reached an agreement with Cleveland Cavaliers general manager Mike Gansey to become the club’s new president of basketball operations, according to multiple league sources.
Gansey, 43, steps in for Daryl Morey, who was dismissed after Philadelphia was swept by the New York Knicks in the second round of the playoffs. The move marks Gansey’s first chance to oversee an NBA front office on his own.
Rise through Cleveland’s front office
The Olmsted Falls, Ohio, native joined the Cavaliers as a front-office staffer during the 2011-12 season and climbed the organizational ladder over the next decade. He was voted G League Executive of the Year in April 2017 while running the Canton Charge, became Cleveland’s assistant general manager later that year and was elevated to general manager in 2022.
With Gansey as GM, the Cavaliers won 51, 48, 64 and 52 games in successive regular seasons and reached the playoffs each year. The team’s 2026 run ended last week when New York completed a sweep in the Eastern Conference finals.
From college standout to executive
Gansey starred at St. Bonaventure and West Virginia and was considered an NBA draft prospect in 2006. His playing hopes were derailed when he contracted MRSA during predraft workouts, requiring hospitalization and leading to a 30-pound weight loss. He later battled the infection a second time in his ankle, which needed surgery. After brief stints in the G League (then the D-League) and overseas stops in Italy, Germany and China, he transitioned to scouting and front-office work.
Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment president Bob Myers, who directed Philadelphia’s search, is expected to collaborate with Gansey on major personnel decisions such as the draft, free agency and the trade deadline.
Next steps in Philadelphia
Sources said Gansey and Sixers assistant general manager Jameer Nelson were the leading candidates during the search. Nelson, a former NBA point guard, is widely expected to receive an internal promotion as part of the front-office reshuffle. Phoenix Mercury GM Nick U’Ren and Minnesota Timberwolves GM Matt Lloyd were also among the finalists.
Gansey will now be tasked with charting Philadelphia’s roster direction after consecutive postseason exits short of the conference finals.
