Boston — The Philadelphia 76ers clawed back from a 3-1 series hole and eliminated the Boston Celtics with a 109-100 victory in Game 7 on Saturday night, registering only the 14th comeback of that magnitude in NBA postseason history.

Center Joel Embiid powered Philadelphia with 34 points, 12 rebounds and six assists, refusing to let the season slip away. Tyrese Maxey supplied 30 points, 11 boards and seven assists, while rookie V.J. Edgecombe added 23 points. Paul George chipped in 13 and delivered several key plays as the No. 7 seed secured a place in the Eastern Conference semifinals.

The Celtics were without All-Star forward Jayson Tatum, an absence that loomed large. Jaylen Brown shouldered the scoring load with 33 points and nine rebounds, Derrick White scored 26 and hit five three-pointers, and Neemias Queta posted 17 points and 12 rebounds. Boston, however, struggled from long range, finishing 13-for-49 beyond the arc.

Philadelphia’s win was only the franchise’s second road Game 7 triumph; the other came in 1982, also in Boston. The series clincher advanced the 76ers to a second-round matchup with the New York Knicks. Game 1 is scheduled for Monday at Madison Square Garden.
